INTRODUCTION
I am Burkey a time traveler. I saved this earth from destruction by changing the course of history so the human race might have a second chance. They destroyed their world because of greed and the racism in their hearts. In the last battle of this people, I was one of the last survivors, I do not know if I was the last. Just as our last man got hit I went back into time to the time of the ancient Greeks.
A man named Hero had built a prototype of the steam engine, that was the cause and start of the problem that ended up in the destruction of this world. I went back and destroyed the machine and the blueprints so they could not make another one. Since I did that the whole history of this world changed and now I am trapped, a lone man in time, never able to go out of this suit. I am stuck in time, stuck between two realities, the reality of my time and this new one I have made. I can not be seen nor heard, I can't influence this people for the better or worse. I can however record the events of this new time and world, and hopefully they do not do the same thing that my people have done.
After I was finished in ancient Greece I pushed the button that would cause me to be invisible, by putting me in a different dimension where time stood still. I never went visible again, for I didn't need to, I had everything that I needed here. The people of this time, as they would have in mine, would have thought I was some sort of alien. I guess in a way I was, and I didn't want to risk what might happen to me. For many centuries I stayed invisible.
I can not very well say my people, for all the people that were born in my history will also be born in this new one, the only difference is that they may not be born in the same placed and they wont do the same thing. I will even be born again. and that is who I am here to talk about. ME
In the new world I was born in California on Christmas day 1970, ten years after I did in my time. I could not believe that I was there again. I was part of this new human being, and as he grew up it got stranger and stranger for me to watch this boy grow up. I thought what he thought, I saw what he saw, I felt what he felt, and I knew what he knew. He couldn't know what I know for I do come from another place in time and another world, completely different, yet it was the same world, a world I didn't know, a world I didn't relate with. It was like going to a different planet, but it was the same planet, and there I was again, living breathing and doing what little boys do. Little did I know that I was also between dimensions, from a different time, and a parallel universe. But this time there was no war, there was no Burkey City, and the countries and continents were as you know them to be.
After a while I learned how to put myself in to him, into me. I could not do it with anyone else, but since this was my own being I found I could. Soon I could see through his eyes, hear through his ears, feel his pain and feel his joys as if it was me, but it was me.
How could this be? I myself was alive and yet there was another me. I was one soul, one entity, but there are two of me, not a clone, but the real genuine thing, it seemed impossible but yet it was true. I would think that if I was where I am from this other time and place that in this planet's new time I wouldn't exist for I existed in the last world and did not die. Then I think of the parallel. It was a parallel between the two times, a parallel between two universes. I was part of my time yet I was also part of this new time.
I heard somewhere, probably on Cinco from Dr. Rex that if you go back in time and stopped or changed, that it would create a new universe, a universe parallel to the old one. Both universes would have the same time, but different things would go on since the change. So I wondered if I could be living in the other universe too doing the same things that I've done, and still be here and still this other me in this time too. That would be three of me, and then if we met it would destroy all that I know.
In the early years there wasn't much to watch. He grew up like all boys do, playing, getting in trouble, and most of all wondering about these strange beings called girls. To him, they looked human, but they acted odd at times. He noticed that they were always changing their minds. Later in life he got close to them a few times then things went in a different direction. He was always a brilliant person, I know because he's me, but this one didn't use his intelligence to its potential till one day while he was in Washington DC on a business trip. This trip changed his life for ever, he got the opportunity to stay and go into the government so he did, to change it for the better. I will tell this to you as a observer even though as the events happened to him they also happened to me.
CHAPTER II
Down the gray granite steps ran Jon Stevens, out of the white columned building that was the Capital Building of The United States. The sun was shinning through the green pine trees behind the massive domed structure. Seconds behind John were the rest of the buildings workers. As soon as they reached the bottom of the steps, a great orange ball of fire came rushing through the arched doorway. The force of the blast caused a great amount of concrete to be flown upon the receding crowd. Minutes later the sounds of sirens and the flashes of lights came blazing in. He looked with his ocean blue eyes as immediately firemen jumped out of the red trucks parked half hazardly along the street, grabbed hoses, and rushed into the burning building.
"What a scene" thought Jon as he faced the reporters all around the crowd. "How could this be? We have no enemies, no factions to over throw the government, why would this happen, and who would do a thing like this." Jon took off his gray blazer and put it on his right shoulder. In came a pouring of questions from the pushing reporters, camera flashes in his face caused him to blink often." I have no idea what caused the explosion or what might be going on, and no more questions, we will have a press conference after we have discovered what happened here." The crowd of reporters hurriedly ran to talk to other witnesses.
Later that day it was reported to Jon what had caused this explosion. "It was the old boiler in the basement." explained Bob, a short, overweight, man about thirty "We found no traces that someone made it explode, if someone did, he did it in such a way that there is no evidence, and also he made a clean get away. I'll tell ya if I find out any more." then he headed out the door as and started whistling.
That night he started thinking. Possibly it was the A.L.C. but why would they blow up the capital building? He recounted the history of the A.L.C. He remembered that they started out as a small unknown, right wing, liberal political party The letters stood for the American Liberal Committee. They slowly got more and more popular with the people by telling then exactly what they wanted to hear. Bit by bit they moved more and more of their people into top government positions. Jon thought that it happened about the same as Hitler had taken over Germany with the NAZI party. `If I remember correctly' he thought to himself `the leader of this party Mr. Hilmer was from Germany. He must have taken the ideas of Hitler and used it for our government'.
The next morning Jon drove to his parents house an hour away. He couldn't work for the capital was still being inspected for clues to the explosion, so he figured it would be a good time to visit his parents. He sat down and discussed what had happened the day before with them, and his father was not surprised.
"I have been expecting something like this to happen for over twelve years and it finally did" Stephen his father said, "ever since the turn of the century when president Piget finished his second term I knew there would be trouble."
"What do you mean?" asked Jon.
"After that happened, the A.L.C. started infesting the government. Their leaders would get elected to office. Then bring in the others of the clan. They started to make unfair laws and raise taxes, no one knew what they were doing, for they made it look like they kept it with in the laws and no one dared to find out what was really happening. Judges were being paid off to let members of the clan out of jail, and some judges were clan members themselves. All this was done in secret. Their ultimate goal was to eliminate this democratic government and put in a dictatorship."
"Why doesn't any one know about that, and what happened to them?"
"As I said earlier they kept this all very secret, you couldn't tell if someone was a clan member or not. They used secret signs and code names to communicate with each other."
"Well how did you find out about this?"
"Like you Jon, I was working in the capital. I was walking down the hall and heard two senators talking. They were planing the assassination of the vice president. They were going to make it look like a natural cause, it was very intricate.
"And you didn't do any thing about it?"
"I couldn't, at the time I was only a mail runner, no one would listen to me, besides I didn't want to get involved, this was bigger than I could handle, so I just kept quiet until I was in a position to do something about it.
"So what happened? Did you tell someone?"
"Jonny, you know me better than anyone, except maybe your mother, you know I couldn't keep it in, but I couldn't just tell everyone. I had to do it as quietly, and as secretly as they did or I would have ended up like Senator Jenkins, floating in the river. They made it look like an accident, but I knew what really happened. So I had to start from the bottom up."
"I know most of this, that's why you became governor of Virginia."
"That's not the only reason I got into politics. I was well respected by my community, I still am, and I felt with all this going on, I could not sit back and just let it happen. Slowly the government was getting worse and worse, we were losing our rights little by little so I had to fight back.
"That must have been hard for you fighting the government like that. How did you do it?"
"To tell you the truth, I wasn't alone. I had help, just like the A.L.C. did. That's how your mother and I got together, she was one of the helpers, but you know that story by heart. Most of my help came from my old friends and college mates who were on the debating team with me. That's how I did so well on my speeches. Those college experiences really did come in handy."
"Yes, I know you were governor, senator and in the cabinet but you never told me how you did it, and I need to know because I might have to do the same thing."
"I worked wonders, yes, and I exposed a lot of the A.L.C. Now they are now in prison. I didn't do it alone, and I had time. You my son do not. And I do not advise you take on the A.L.C. They are much too powerful now. They practically have control of everything. Ever since Piget was in office this government clinched it's hold on the citizens of this country.
"You're right dad. Now-a-days it's hard to go to the bathroom with out them knowing about it. So how do you know that they aren't listening to this conversation?"
"I don't, but it's very doubtful. They know not to mess with me, besides, I live way out here in the boonies. They aren't interested in people who live way out here. They mostly concentrate on the cities and the suburbs."
"That's something I can work with dad, I'll try to be careful out there."
"There are a few candidates out there who really do want to help this nation, but most of them just want the power."
"Its been that way ever since I can remember, but with working in the center of it all myself, I can usually tell the frauds from the ones that want to do something good, which are few."
"That's good son, you keep an eye out and you'll be all right."
Jon left his parents house and drove back to DC As he drove along the long winding country road he thought about the conversation that he and his father just had. It made a lot of sense. He thought about how twelve years ago when he was just a teenager, Piget had been in office for about a year. His health plan was being put into place. The largest objection was not the plan it's self, but soon Piget wanted to monitor the people. He didn't think credit cards and so forth were enough, he felt that all information about a person should be carried with them at all times. The thought of someone losing a card was disturbing, so he discussed this problem with top medical staff and scientists. They decided on putting a micro chip in the forehead, or the right arm, that would have all the information on it. There would be no choice starting in the fall 1998 all babies born in the hospitals would have one inserted at birth. The only way you could avoid this was to have the child at home, or in another country, and having them at home was illegal.
The health plan went in to affect in the spring of 1998 and people had mixed feelings about this. After a while Piget proposed the micro chips and the nation went into utter chaos. Nobody wanted this to happen to their children. Many attempts on the presidents life were made, none were successful. The president went into exile and was later impeached by the proper process, he was only the second to go through that process. Greston was then made president, he didn't do a very good job at it. The U.S. fell into hard economic times. Greston soon left the presidency, and that's where the present problem started.
At this time Burkey thought he should try to help with this problem. He ran for office, making headway with his revolutionary new ideas about politics, this was a great triumph for him since he was so young at the time, only 27. Many with the same views followed and supported him. He bypassed the usual routine of working his way up and ran straight for senator. Surprisingly he won. But just as he was making his strides so was the A.L.C. but they were doing it more secretly. Of course all corrupt politicians say they are helping the nation, but these did for a while until they get their following, then they turn around and do the opposite. Jon could recall one candidate of five years ago that did exactly this. He ran the speech over in his head noting the inconsistencies in it that were so well hidden that only a master politician, or speaker could pick them up.
" My fellow Americans," he said "lend me your ears, and listen with your hearts. I will not lie to the people of this fine country, like the other politicians have done, and do. But I will tell you what I feel is true. This country is not doing fine, the economy is failing fast, taxes are the highest they have ever been, there is an astounding amount of crime sweeping this country, you have to lock up everything, and the most important is the government is corrupt ;it has been for the last twenty years since Bush was in office. You need a leader, a leader to get this country out of the hard times we are in, and to avoid harder times still ahead. And as your new leader, I will try my best and work my hardest to pull this country back into being the super power it once was. I will not promise you outlandish promises, but I will promise one thing, I will do all that I can to help this great nation.
The deficit is at an alarming rate, the amount is so astronomical that I wont even go into it. It is possible to make a huge cut in it though. The government is spending far too much in frivolous areas. Under my leadership this spending can be cut. With this spending cut, taxes can go down and you can live comfortably again.
Piget, before he was impeached, started a national health program led by his ex-wife Jane. They told us that it will cut costs, they told us the poor would get good health care, they told us that everyone should be on it. As you know it was all lies, some things happened but not as they said. Sure they got health care, but after diagnosis, they had to some times wait for up to 5 months for treatment. The hospitals got over crowded. This was not what they promised. I plan to put this nation back onto regular health care.
Jobs in this country are few, most of the businesses went out of country to save operating costs, and pay the employees less. I hope to bring the businesses back into the country. There need to be more jobs and start a better economy. I plan on national projects like Hoover had during the Great Depression. For even now we are in a depression, not as bad as the one during the 30s, but with the country going as it is we will be in only a few years.
Gangs are running amuck in all areas terrorizing law abiding citizens, they need to be stopped. Drugs have always been a problem with these groups. Control the drugs, and you control them. The retired have no money due to the unfair social security system. Many people denounced their citizenship and moved to other countries because this one was becoming corrupt. We need to pull this country back together, and as a team we can do it."
To Jon this speech did make a lot of sense, but he knew this congressman wasn't telling the whole truth and was afraid of him becoming president. As Jon drove his car to his small apartment parking lot he saw Burkey there waiting for him.
"What's up?" asked Burkey
"Nothing much now, you know what happened this morning they said it was the boiler but I feel it was sabotaged"
"Yes, I think so too but there's no proof yet one way or the other."
"I think it's the A.L.C. with another one of it's tricks. They're getting more powerful all the time and now it's even harder to tell who is part of it and who isn't."
"I know what you mean Jon, the Senate is two thirds A.L.C. and you can't even tell who is who."
"It's not only the government, it's the businesses, the whole country is going to the dogs. I tell you the constitution is hanging by a thread. People commit crimes at will now. The judicial system is so corrupt that the worst criminals don't even see the inside of a jail cell. The police you know are mostly A.L.C., there are only a handful of good cops left, and the A.L.C. is finding ways to get rid of them too. Soon I feel that this once great nation will be turned into a second world country under a conniving deceitful dictator with the citizens in the palm of his hands."
They got into Burkey?s car and started to drive. They got just out side of the city and took a side road leading south east. All the while they talked. "We're not too far off from that now Jon. That's why I'm not running for the senate again next year. It has gotten so bad here that I can't do a thing as a senator any more. The government has gotten too corrupt for me, and I don't want to be caught in the middle of it any more. As you know, they are about to legalize drugs. For years I was able to stop them in one way or another, but now it's useless. They have gotten too powerful for me, and I can not stand to be in a situation like that."
"What can we do, start a revolution? I know that you can't just sit and watch this nation keep falling like it is, and I know that I can't. But what can we do about it?"
" It may just have to come to that Jon. May I never see the day when it does come to that, but things are just too bad now that I see no way it will ever turn around. It will take a miracle from GOD to get this nation back into democracy, back to the way it was when the founders wrote the original constitution."
"The government has taken too much control over our lives. Sure we still have our liberties of the bill of rights, but then too they are messing with that. I thought when they legalized guns back in 1999 that was the worst step they had made, but since then they have gotten worse."
After a half hour of driving on old country roads out in the middle of nowhere, Burkey drove up to a old two story plantation style house. The white wash was coming off and the weeping willows in the front looked like they hadn't been trimmed in over 50 years. As they walked through the front door Jon noticed that it hadn't been lived in for at least 10 years. The furniture was covered with sheets, the place was filled with cobwebs and dust. There was a mildewy smell all about. Burkey pulled open the drapes and put open the sashes then said "This place has been deserted for the past ten years. An old friend used to live here with his family when we were just in our 20's, but then as he saw this country getting worse he moved to Uruguay where his wife was from. He left this place for me to tend if I ever decided to move here, well I finally decided to move out of the city to where I could have some peace of mind and not worry so much of what the government is doing."
"How could you just give it all up? you've been in the government for a long time, it's what you do."
"When I realized that there was nothing I could really do in the government I felt it was no use, Besides there are a lot of things I always wanted to do that I never have had time to do, and now I have a chance to do them."
"But you are the most respected person in government, people listen to you. A lot think you should run for president.
"That may have been true years ago, But now I am like an outcast. The congress is ruled by the A.L.C. and even if I do get backers it still won't be enough to do anything against them."
"What has this country come to? I remember a time when it was safe for kids to play out side and go places unsupervised, but now unless you have a constant eye on them they aren't safe, unless you live way out here in the boonies where a cockroach wouldn't even want to go."
They both laughed. For a second Burkey thought about what Jon had said about how this country had become. He too could remember the days back in California when he used to run and play and go places at will, not thinking twice about what might happen to him, but those days were long since past. He too thought about a revolution, if one was to be organized and started would it be successful? Where would they get the man power? Where would they get the weapons. I am a politician, he said silently to himself, not a warrior.
"A revolution would be futile," Burkey said "there aren't enough men or weapons we could get our hands on to fight against the A.L.C. there would be no way that we could win. Besides if we did win what would become of it, what would this nation do after?"
"You could be the new president, or some kind of leader Burkey, there are millions of people who would follow you at the drop of a hat and you know that."
"This nation has been like a socialist country for 10 years. Remember how it was in 1990 when Russia fell and became democratic, or tried to anyway? It only lasted for 6 years because they didn't know how to be anything but communist, and now the people of this country depend on the government too much to do anything for themselves."
"I see what you mean. I remember a group that had enough of this government and they all denounced their citizenship. They didn't have to pay taxes..."
"But they couldn't work either, or drive or anything."
"But they didn't want to. They set up their own little community and lived on what they could raise."
"Yes, but I don't see myself going that far. I think I'll stay right here, I have enough in the bank to live off of for quite a long time."
Jon and Burkey walked around the large house to see its condition. They looked at the property and the small lake about 100 meters from the back door. Then they went back inside to look at the rest of the house. Burkey thought to himself- I'm going to miss the government, but the way it is now I'm glad to be out of it. This nation is going to destroy it's self from the inside out, well it already is, but if I don't start a revolution then surely someone will and with my knowledge of politics we could stand a good chance, we could get them right where it matters the most. I just don't know.
This place would make a good headquarters, he thought to himself with a half quirked smile on his face, it's far from civilization, we have a basement, and it could be protected. But who else could we get to help us?
CHAPTER III
"Your honor, we would like to call the defendant to the stand. Please state your name" said the attorney Miss Barnes. She was just past 30 and a well bred woman who like Burkey and Jon, didn't like the way the judicial system ran. She decided to be an attorney to see if she could make a difference. She hadn't been out of law school for more than two years, but she was climbing in success and respect. As a rule attorneys were to be a public attorney for the first five years of their careers, then they were able to go into private firms.
"My name is Shon Howard. "said Shon. He was a young man in his twenties. He wore a ragged flannel shirt and a 49ers cap. He looked as if he was intimidated by the person questioning him, and so he was.
"Don't you mean to say Charles Davidson?" asked Miss Barnes with an eye of doubt and conviction.
"No, I said, and I meant, that my name is Shon Micheal Howard." retorted the defendant.
Miss Barnes looked him straight in the eye and remarked, "Remember you swore on the bible to tell the truth, and we expect you to do that."
"I am telling the truth," replied Shon defensively "I am not Charles Davidson, although many times people thought I was, I always thought it was a bit strange myself."
"Then who do you think is Charles Davidson?"
"He is my twin brother."
An ah could be heard through out the room as jurors and watchers were all surprised to hear this statement, but none more than Miss Barnes.
"We have no record of you having any brothers, much less having a twin brother." She said feeling that the earlier statement had no truth in it what so ever.
"I only found out myself about six months ago." said Shon trying to win back his credibility.
"So please tell me and the court how you found this twin brother who you claim is the actual Charles Davidson."
"As I said, during my life people have come up to me thinking I was someone named Charles, but I always told them I wasn't and I didn't know who it was. Then one day about six months ago I was at the mall and I saw some one that looked like me, and I couldn't believe it myself. I went for a closer look and he didn't only resemble me, but he looked exactly like me, I thought some one was playing a trick on me till I realized that he was just as astonished to find that there was someone that looked exactly the same as him. The only differences we could see was that I have a birth mark behind my right ear and he wears an ear ring in his. We were so astonished by this that we went to some doctor friend of his to check us out. The doctor said that physically on the outside, except the birthmark, there were no differences, the doctor thought his eyes were going bad. He suggested that we take a simple blood test to see if we were related. So we did, and we found that, besides a few unnatural contents in Charles' blood, our blood was exactly the same. The only conclusion could be that we were and are identical twins."
"This is a most interesting story that you have told us" said Miss Barnes in an elevated and sarcastic tone, and her well groomed eyebrows in a high arch. "But if you really are twins how come you only found out six months ago?"
Shon gulped then resumed telling the story, "Well I felt all my life that there was something missing, a part of me was gone. Now I understand what it was that was missing. I remember my parents telling me at a very young age that I was adopted, they didn't know who my parents were, the adoption agency didn't release that information to them. They only said that I was adopted two weeks after I was born. I was curious to find out what had happened then and so was my brother, so we went to the adoption agency to get some answers."
"What did you find there, did they give you the answers you were looking for?" secretly she was starting to believe this incredible story that the defendant was telling them. She was known for her good judge of character.
"No, they didn't but my mother did?"
"How did she do that? But first, there has been a question in my mind all this time that you have talked about your brother, if you actually do have a brother why isn't he here to show us that there is really two of you and not one?" that was a good question she thought, she would certainly find the truth with this one.
"Objection your honor" came a holler from the defending attorney "She is badgering the defendant"
"Objection denied," said the judge as he nodded at Mrs. Barnes.
"So where is your brother?" she asked again.
"What do you think?" asked the defendant "he doesn't want to go to jail, so he took off and left me behind to take the rap for him. We aren't close as you might think twins would be, we have no unexplained cling to each other. Yes, we look a like, but that's about all. We come from two different backgrounds, two different ways of life, we're two different people. there are other similarities but those could happen between any two related people or friends."
"Like what?"
"We like the same foods, the same sports, that type of thing"
"Lets get back to your mother, your birth mother, how did she give you answers to your questions?"
"Well the people in the orphanage gave us a letter that was dropped off by her when she brought us there. She wanted us to read it when we found each other and knew that we were twins, and old enough to understand, and we could only see the letter of we were together."
"So what did this letter say?" asked Miss Barnes with a puzzled look on her face.
"I brought it with me today you can read it if you like, it explains everything"
"We will take a ten minute recess while we read this letter" said the judge signaling to the bailiff to come and get the letter.
The bailiff came over to Shon and asked for the letter.
Shon reluctantly gave him the letter as if it were a treasured object of great sentimental value. Unsurprisingly to Shon it was, for it was the only link to his real mother that he had. Both attorneys, the judge, and the bailiff went into the judges chambers and read the letter.
"Dear boys," it read "By the time you read this it will be at least 10 years since I wrote it so I wrote it in past tense form.
I suppose you two have found each other since you are reading this letter. I am very sorry for what I have done, and I wish that I didn't have to put you up for adoption, but there was nothing else I could do. I was only sixteen. Your father, at the time my boyfriend, and I did what other couples like us do. Unfortunately for us I ended up getting pregnant. My boyfriend didn't want to take responsibility for them and left me. I don't believe in abortion, so I decided to have the baby. When I found out that there were twins I knew I couldn't raise both of you so I thought it be best that you should be adopted and you could be there for those who couldn't have children of their own. I think that, is a big injustice. Many couples want to have children but by the causes of nature they aren't able to, and many teen age girls that get pregnant and are able to have children and some get rid of them through abortion, or other means. So I gave you up. Don't think that I don't love you, I do, that's why I had to do it. I hoped that you would be put into good homes that could provide you with more than I ever could. I hope that you don't hate me for this, and I hope that you grow up to be nice, charitable men.
Remember I do love both of you.
Your Mother Christine
"Get the number to the orphanage bailiff I would like to call the them," said the judge as he carefully folded the old, slightly worn paper that was read over and over again by Shon and Charles, It was stained by their many tears that had fallen on the paper during those readings. The bailiff promptly looked in the telephone book and called the number of the orphanage, then handed the receiver to the judge. Miss Barnes looked on queerly as the judge talked to someone at the orphanage. She knew now that she would loose this case, but this really didn't matter. She was a public prosecutor although she knew from the start that Shon was innocent. He just looked like he couldn't do anything wrong. She marveled at this for a moment and thought to herself...that for once in a long time there was a person or a family that was good. There were parents who had risen their child up right, the way her grandparents had raised her mother, and from this she knew that he was innocent.
The judge hung up the phone and they all walked back into the court room where the jury and the audience were waiting in suspense to find out if what the defendant said was true. They all took their seats and the judge started to speak. He said " I have called the orphanage to confirm what this young man was telling us. I spoke to the head director there and found that on May 6, 1988 there were two babies dropped off by a woman. She did leave a letter with them, and one was adopted two weeks later and one three weeks later. As the evidence proves the defendant is a twin. There for the charges on Shon are dropped, and he is allowed to go free, however the warrant on his brother is still in effect. This court is adjourned." then with the slam of the gavel the court was dismissed.
Miss Barnes was walking out of the courtroom congratulating Shon when Burkey and Jon walked up to her. "Shayla," Burkey called. After she walked over to him and Jon he said, "We need your help."
"With what?" asked Shayla.
"Lets go somewhere else and then we can discuss this."
"I have to take care of a few things right now but I'll get with you as soon as I can" She told them in a hurried voice.
Burkey looked at her with an eye of affection and told her to hurry. He had always admired Shayla for her strong will. If there was something that she wanted she would just go out and get it, or do what it took to get it. These two had known each other all their lives, in fact they were best friends, they grew up together in California. They both had opportunities to come to DC and they decided they would come together, that way they would know at least one person in the city. Burkey looked at her slender body walking away from him, and her light brown hair flowing behind her. He didn't mind being close to her, actually he rather liked it. Since she was an inch shorter than him he was able to look into her bright blue eyes with out any problem, however when ever he did this he found his heart racing a little faster than before. He then remembered he had to tell her where to meet them then he shouted "Meet us at T.J.s when you're done."
"It should only take an hour" she yelled back, a little quieter than Burkey "I'll meet you then."
Burkey and Jon walked to the restaurant around the corner. When Shayla got there Burkey and Jon told her about the plan that they have been working on to start a revolution.
"You guys are crazy!" Shayla exclaimed "It will never work. You know how strong the A.L.C. is, the revolution would be crushed. Remember when Alaska wanted to break away, it didn't even take a day for them to be stopped."
"Yes I know." replied Burkey "But we have something up on them that they didn't. We know how the government works and if we manipulate the right people we will have that much more of an advantage. It is corrupt from the inside out, we will break it up from the inside out. Plus there are lots of people in the government like you and I who don't like it either and want to do something about it. Remember Shayla," he added "not everybody in the government are part of the A.L.C., just most of them, the others feel the same way we do."
"Sounds risky" said Shayla as she sipped on her chocolate malt. "If, and I do mean a big IF, we do succeed what will happen then? And who will help us? It takes more than three people to have a revolution, you need thousands even millions."
"I plan on bringing back the original constitution, and I know some one who will help us a great deal, that is if he will help us, plus I have a few others in mind also."
"That's only a couple more, we still need a lot more."
"Don't worry dear," he said in a sarcastic voice "I have it all planned out, well, most of it anyway. Come one there's someone we have to go see."
Jon, Burkey and Shayla left the restaurant and headed for his friends laboratory. They drove out into the country. After about 20 miles they turned on to an unmarked dirt road, the only sign said "Private property, trespassers will be immobilized." They continued driving on the dirt road. They went around hills that seemed to go 15 miles back in to the country. The scenery was beautiful. There were trees along the road blossoming, flowers in the fields, wild animals running about. To Shayla this was truly a heavenly place.
"Do you really think Dr. Rex will help us?" asked Shayla with a questioning face."
"I should think so." said Burkey with out any hesitation "He's been wanting to take on the government for some time, but he fears he can't do it alone. He doesn't like the government, never has."
"He shouldn't be afraid of anyone; the government should be afraid of him with all those things he has around." Jon said.
"You have a point there Jon, he is known as `The Einstein of Our Time' he's won more science awards than anyone in history." added Burkey with a slight smile. Burkey was pleased with his friends' accomplishments. He thought it takes a special breed of person to break the mold and try new things, even if others think that it's totally impossible.
Dr. Rex was exactly this type. All his life he went into the different things of the mind. He thought the unusual, and he did the unusual. Now he was working with magnetic fields for propulsion. He already designed secret aircraft for the military, but later he regretted it. The military told him that they would not use his planes unless war broke out, but as they always do, they went back on their word. However to Dr. Rex it didn't really matter. He was beyond that stage, and compared to what he did for the military, his inventions were far beyond. Those planes now were obsolete. At the age of 25 he was the youngest man to win the Nobel Prize in science and he did all this with out even graduating from high school.
The three drove up to the large wall that surrounded the home with a tall iron gate, and laboratory of Dr.Rex. A large holographic picture of Dr.Rex appeared in front of the car. Burkey was not stunned by this for he came here often, he and Rex were friends from their childhood?s. Shayla jumped back in surprise as the figure in front of them appeared, and Jon just shook his head. Jon had heard many things about Dr.Rex but he had never been to his lab, thus he only thought it comical, that the figure appeared. They were all used to seeing who they talked to but never in this way before.
The figure said "Ah Burkey how nice of you to drop by, but I didn't expect you to come here with all the things going on lately, and I see you brought some friends with you this time."
"We need your help" Burkey replied.
"That's not unusual, I'll be delighted to help you, come on in." Just then the large iron gates opened and the car drove its self slowly to the large stone building that had the appearance of a castle of ancient England.
The sun was shining brightly as they stepped out of the red Toyota IR5. Dr.Rex stepped out of the building and walked over a draw bridge then greeted his friends.
"Wow, this looks just like a castle from old England." Shayla commented.
"Indeed it is" replied Rex.
"Isn't it cold and drafty inside? I heard those things weren't at all comfortable to live in."
"Not at all, though it has the appearance of an old castle it is really rather new. I built it five years ago. It has all the conveniences of the modern times, actually more. Just the outside looks like a castle. I always wanted one" he finished with a giggle.
"That's amazing," Jon said " from the outside you could never tell that it is new."
"Well, thank you I'll take that as a complement. It wasn't all my doing though, my wife helped quite a bit."
"Where is she now?" asked Burkey.
"She's shopping as women do, but for groceries, I can't seem to work on an empty stomach you know."
"I bet your wondering what we need your help with," said Burkey.
"No, you always seem to have something up your sleeve and with the company you brought with you today I bet it's something with the government. Am I right?"
"Yes you are Rex, I think it's about time that someone does something about the government. It's gotten too bad now, the constitution is no longer being followed, and the streets are not safe to walk in any more."
"They weren't safe back in 1994, ever since Clinton had to resign this country has been going down hill." Rex said "I always thought you were crazy for going into government like you did, but I know you were just trying to turn the system around."
"Yes, I tried and tried, and I did some good but there just isn't anything I can do any more. The government has rotted from the in side out, and now I think it has to be taken over from the out side."
"I try to stay out of politics as you know Burkey, I've never cared for them, but I can see your point. But there is one problem. What will happen to all the people in this nation who are dependent upon the government for their lives. Oh, people have gotten so lazy in the past twenty years, they want the government to do everything for them. I remember the good old days when the community wasn't dependent on the government to do everything for them. You could start a business and run it yourself, you had your own insurance, and medical. That's why I moved way out here in the country. I want as little to do with government as possible, and now the only way to do that is to live where they don't want to go, and that is way out here."
Dr. Rex gave them a tour of the large laboratory and showed them the things that he was working on, and the things that he had already made. "Some people think of me as the mad scientist" Dr. Rex started. "I guess I might fit that image pretty well, I try new inventions, things that no other person has tried before, and probably don't want to. I live in this castle that might look like a mad scientists lab, like in `Frankenstein', remember that was the name of the man, not the monster. There is one fundamental difference between me and those other kind. I try to use my knowledge for good, in helping the people, in improving lives. However sometimes I do get tricked , and my ideas are used for destruction."
Just as he finished speaking they entered a large room, books filled the walls and all assumed this was the library, and they were right. Dr. Rex resumed, "This is my library, in it is every book written in all the fields of science, psychology, medicine, spirituality, and over 100 other subjects. Some I have even written myself" he then pointed to the far wall. "It has taken me 20 years to collect all these, and some are of great value, and those were the hardest to get. And in case you are wondering, yes, I have read all of them, some more than once."
Indeed this was a sight to behold, no one has ever been known to have so many books and magazines and pamphlets and the like. Burkey could only remember one place that stored more books than this, that was the Library Of Congress. Amazingly all these things were neatly organized into subjects and authors. This indeed was an example of the greatness and power of knowledge.
"Come now, let us go into the living room and we will discuss what you have asked of me." said Dr. Rex. The walked out of the library into a large brightly lit room, but there were no lights to be seen, nor windows.
"How do you light this room with out light bulbs or windows?" asked Jon.
"Look up" said Rex.
All of them looked up and saw a big window in the ceiling of the great room.
Dr.Rex explained that all the house used natural lighting or a natural energy source, that is the sun, wind, water, and other magnetic forces that he had discovered during his studies, and why not put them all into good use. In fact, 200 of his inventions, or methods that he discovered he used here in the house, like all good scientists he had to make sure that all these things worked and were harmless, but of course with his mind, he clearly thought out every thing before hand, so the things he built were safe.
They sat down on a big a big couch and started discussing the plans that Jon and Burkey had made.
"Very interesting" said Dr.Rex, "but as you know I don't like to use these things for destruction."
"But as you know with the way this government is going right now it will destroy its self within a matter of months, we have to do something now or it will be too late, we can take control peacefully with out many casualties if we act now, and if we don't this nation will be thrown into war. Americans against Americans. Worse than the civil war. And worse if the reunited Russia sees this they will think it a perfect time to attack. We can do it Rex with your equipment and with our knowledge of the government. We need to instill a sense of nationalism back into this country, people have been leaving here by the tens of thousands a year since the year 2000 because of the high taxes, the corruption of government, the interference of religion and all the other stuff that has been going on. Even TV got so bad that if I had kids I wouldn't let them watch it, I don't even like watching it myself. The constitution has been ripped apart and it's time someone puts it back together. The original United States under the original constitution. I have been thinking a lot about it lately. I tried to help fix it the other way, and now that wont work."
"But how will you do it?" asked Rex "and how will my inventions help you? Causing a revolt is very dangerous it's a lot more difficult than you realize. But I feel that you are right, the world is getting worse all the time, especially this country. I will do what I can to help you. But leave my name out of it, I don't want to be bothered with the FEDS bothering me."
"Thank you Rex with out you this would be impossible" They then all went over some plans to break the government, capture the leaders, then he would re-establish the constitution that the founding fathers wrote, and work on a new system. They knew it would take months before everything in their plans would run smoothly, but the hardest part was making the first step.
Chapter IV
The first plan was to propose something in congress that the two parties most disagree on and then that would disrupt them, and then the A.C.M (American Constitutional Movement) or another term to be used was the `Freedom Fighters' as they would be known by after the group could get under way.
They planned to use Burkey?s plantation house as the main base, no one would suspect that place. It was out of the way and not many people knew about the house. To guard it, Rex installed an anti-radar device that disrupts the signals of any other radar or radio wave signal than ones specified, therefore no one could use a tracking devise on cars going in or out of a twenty mile radius. They built the main headquarters in the basement so the rock and the concrete would act as insulators for any magnetic fields that would be tried to be put on the house, That is, if they ever found the base.
Since Burkey, Jon, and Shayla all worked for the government the first part of the plan was easy. They knew who to contact and just what to tell them to get them to serve their purposes. They knew their way around the law and how to use it to their advantage, although they also knew the government knew how to completely break them. Sometimes Burkey felt as if he was doing something wrong, but then Shayla would talk to him and remind him that their intent was good, and so was what they were doing.
I sat and watched all this from out side and inside, often times giving ideas to Burkey about how to do things, since I had watched the destruction of my people. It was interesting to learn that most people did the same thing, or close to it, as they did in my world. Rex was still a scientist, politicians were still politicians and etc. The government once again was going corrupt, and it pained my soul to see it happening once more. I thought that possibly I could leap back into time again and change history again, but then I realized that it wasn't mine to change, although I had once, I couldn't do it again. But I could, I could work with Burkey, which was myself so there would be no harm in it, and help these `Freedom Fighters' as I choose to call them. For here I am again fighting for the same thing that I fought for in my time, freedom of not only the USA but the freedom of the world. I hope that this time it will succeed so I don't have to see the destruction of the world for a second time.
Oh. how I long to be back with my own people in my own time. Even though the world I had known had been destroyed, as time went on, I thought that I would have rather died fighting for what I believe in with the ones I love, than be stuck here alone, living and not dying, and not loving, with out the ability to hold a girls hand, with out the possibility of breathing and living with out this suit. I have thought of going back, back into time before Hero, then leaping again into the future to my own time and living again with my friends and family, breathing the air with out the aid of this suit, eating real food again.
The more I thought the more I wished that it could really happen. But I didn't know if this suit would travel through time again or if it just worked once. I remembered back on Cinco when the Rex I knew was developing this suit, perhaps he can do it again, but actually this time device was never tested before I used it so I didn't try it again because I didn't want to be stuck somewhere between two realities in time, never knowing when or where I am. So I decided that I would just continue with this time and perhaps someday there will be a way for me to get out of this suit, and I thought if anyone could do it Rex could.
On Monday April 8, 2009 the revolution of the Freedom Fighters began. The head quarters were ready, and the proper people were contacted to disrupt the stability of the congress and government, as well as the A.L.C. now it was time for the real revolt. Burkey, Jon and Shayla contacted the people who would support them and they all met at the house.
"You know why we have contacted you and brought you here. This revolt could only happen in this place while all of congress is together. We have planned it to be non violent, but it just may turn to the worst so be ready to expect anything. Dr. Rex here is our guardian, as you know these things are set up all over the property. And just so you know he can detect if any of you are spies for the A.L.C. you will be found out and dealt with accordingly"
To Burkey?s joy, all of them were sincere about what they intended to do. Since all of the participants of the revolt, thus far, were earlier in the government, top businessmen, or other respected members of the country, the revolt had a better chance of succeeding. There would be many people who would follow them, plus they had a budget to work with, and the top minds in the country could plan this out with no problem.
Dr. Rex. also had the bases for the Freedom Fighters in the other states protected to. No one with out a special decoder, disguised as a beeper was allowed in the buildings. Every measure was taken so the A.L.C. couldn't find out what they were planning to do. If one did, his memory would automatically be erased from a subliminal message that came from the beeper.
The basement was filled with the top computers, with these the Freedom Fighters could find out and expose A.L.C.s' secrets, and plan a strategy to expose other government processes. They could infiltrate the computers and stop communication between all of the offices in the government, but allowing them to still work with the public, which they did rarely anyway. Rex and other computer experts in the Freedom Fighters put a security system on the computers so that no one could find out who was tapping into the governments' private files of the computers. The congressmen and others that worked in the government still worked like normal as if nothing was going on. They still attended meetings, and debated with the others of the group like they did before. However they did take back the additional information to the Freedom Fighters so they could further monitor the government. All they discovered was put into the papers under an anonymous person so the whole public would know the secrets of the A.L.C. and would distrust them.
Within two months they made great strides in their objective. As far as the knew, no one expected anything, it was time to move on to plan B.
I watched all this with wonder, and it reminded me of back home. For a century before the Great War broke out, my world was relatively like it is now. Great countries were breaking up, people depending on computers to do their basic tasks. However there were two major differences. One was in this new Earth, they hadn't reached long term space flight yet, and that was good. These people, even though they were the same people wouldn't be able to handle it and I'm afraid if they did achieve it, the Great War would be sooner than it had been in my time. The second was although this world was corrupt, it still wasn't as bad as it was in my time.
I realized also that most of the friends that Burkey, or I, had in this new time were the same, except a few. He was still friends with Dr.Rex, and Gennipher(Genna), Gabe, Cindy, and others. This time also they helped in this revolt. Although they could not all be together they did what they could from their respective positions. It was better this way though, because the Freedom Fighters had a wider distribution, therefore they were not as centralized, so it was harder for the A.L.C. to track them.
In Israel, Gabe reported that the millennial war was finally over. He lived in the States but by birth right had been drafted into the Jewish army. For the past ten year for he had been in Israel to help them fight the war. Now he was a high ranking colonel in the army but still didn't like the way the government ran. The Jews, Arabs, and Muslims who had been fighting over territory for thousands of years, had finally come to rest. That was only because Egypt had gotten sick of them fighting over it and conquered the whole place. But that created a new problem, those parties that were fighting over the land now were getting together to fight against Egypt. NATO stayed out of it because they weren't in the pact.
Gennipher stayed in California and became a doctor, as she did in the old world. She had been successful in her profession, she was married with eight children and one more on the way. She married a successful physical therapist named Brian. Burkey however, always called him Bro.
They all were in the Freedom Fighters plus more of his friends who all helped the cause with their specialties in their respective fields. The revolt would have not been able to go as long as it has if it wasn't for their help.
The Freedom Fighters continued with their plans. Since the U.S. treasury was nearly out of money, actually it had a great debt ever since the 1960s, that has never been able to be paid off. The top government leaders, such as the president, cabinet, and congress were in such a fury that they could not decide on what to do about the situation. They knew that there were revolts being planned and they were also worried about what was being said in the press. Literally they were running like chickens with their heads cut off.
The time to act was now or never. The capital building and the White House, had to be seized now. Over these passed four months the damages to the capital building had been fixed. The head officials of the A.L.C. had to be rounded up and dealt with as quickly as possible.
Burkey and his group worked in many ways now. With his friends in other places in the U.S., they made it look like there were many different factions that wanted to revolt, the A.L.C. not knowing that they were all part of the same one tried to deal with them separately. However, with Dr. Rex?s' protection, the A.L.C. didn't get very far.
The problem now, lied with man power, and weapons to do it. They would try not to have anyone killed. They sent messages through the underground and got as many supporters as they could find. Even others from different countries joined in this cause. Burkey?s friend in Uruguay was to lead a group there, Gennipher in California led a group there, and many others.
Burkey, Jon, Shayla, and Dr. Rex decided that the time was now, because the government, at all levels, was distraught and the general population was in a panic. There were many small marches on city halls and many protests, none of which were planned by the Freedom Fighters but to them it was all the better. With in two months this country went from a stable one to complete panic.
It was morning the sun was shining brightly warming that beautiful spring day. Every one was gathered or contacted and in their positions to start the official raids on the government buildings. Burkey was in charge of one group, Jon was in charge of another. The weapons were provided by Gabe who flew in with his troops from the far east. Gennipher was ready in southern California, while Cindy was ready in Sacramento. Others were ready in various parts of the country. They mainly concentrated on the large cities and the state capitals.
To Burkey?s unbelief, with in four months the Freedom Fighters had gathered over a million supporters who would take part in the raids. It was unimaginable to him that he had organized such a great thing, but he didn't give all the credit to himself, there were many others who put in long hours planning, training, getting supplies, and other things. Most of all he thanked Shayla, who kept his spirits up during these preparations. They were closer now than ever before.
He reflected on all the times when he was about to give it all up, as if it was a hopeless childhood dream to rule the world. He remembered studying about Hitler back in college and how he wanted to rule Germany. One night in particular was especially hard. He remembered like it was yesterday. Questions kept running through his head -Am I like Hitler?- he asked himself. -Why am I doing this? Do I think this will really happen, or am I just fooling myself? Shayla was right back then at the restaurant. The A.L.C. is too powerful, I'm not a fighter, I'm not a warrior, why am I doing this?
Shayla was silently watching him as she had many times before with out Burkey knowing about it. But this time she could see the anguish in his face, she knew that something was bothering him. She slowly walked up to him and sat down next to him on the couch. She asked him what the matter was, in her most caring voice.
"I don't know" he said with a smothered voice, his face being in his hands, "Is what we're doing the right thing? I don't want to end up like Hitler. He got his dream of ruling Germany, and when things weren't going his way he killed himself."
"How dare you compare yourself with him!" she said with a loving but firm voice, "He was a psychopath! Your nothing like him, you're trying to right the wrong that has happened in this country."
"How can I expect to do such an impossible thing as take on the A.L.C. and overthrow the government? It sounds like I'm a renegade, and if it doesn't work and we get caught we'll all be put to death for treason."
She looked him straight in the eyes and said "There's a good reason why you started this revolt. You wanted to make this country great again and you knew that it would succeed. You believed in it so much that you got me to follow you, and you know how I felt at first. But now I feel we're doing the right thing, this is the only thing that can be done. Burkey I know you can do this, I know it will succeed, look at how far we've come, we can't pull out now."
"I just don't know anymore..."
"Don't give me that! I know you too well to know that you would just give up. You've never given up. I know you better than anybody, better than yourself, and I know you're no quitter"
"You're right, What would I do with out you?"
"Nothing," she said with a faint smile and a giggle.
He gave her a big hug and said "You're right"
"You ready?" Asked a voice seemed to come out of nowhere and brought Burkey back in to reality. Gabe was standing behind him fully ready to fight a war.
"Yes, Are the men all assembled? Does everyone know what they have to do? Is all the equipment ready and working"
"Don't worry, we've been through this a thousand times, we've drilled it so many times the men dream it in their sleep at night."
"Good then let's roll out, I'll be there in a sec, I have to go talk to Shayla and Rex before we go."
"Everyone in the trucks" Gabe yelled. At once the troops started piling into the two extra long semis' that had been provided by a owner of a trucking company. No one would ever expect troops coming out of a U.S. postal truck and a catering truck.
Burkey went in to the house and saw that everything there was in order. "The trackers are on" said Rex "and the force fields on the trucks are working fine, and the camera relays are linked up. Every thing here is ready, now go and kick some butt!!"
Shayla gave Burkey one last hug and a kiss on the cheek for luck. as her tears fell on his camouflage shirt she said. "You better not come back in a body bag."
"I won't" he replied. Then he turned and went out side to join the others. She watched as the trucks rolled away down the dirt road. When they were out of sight she sat down and wept.
Rex knowing why she was crying said, "You should have told him."
"I couldn't, besides how did you know how I felt about him?"
"Remember what I?ve been studying for the past twenty years. It's not hard to tell when someone is love, especially the way you look at him."
"I didn't think any one noticed." she said as she started to blush.
"Most people don't. Especially the person who you wish could the most. It was obvious to me. The thing I don't know is, how long have you felt this way about him?"
"For a long time now. I think it started in college."
"Then why haven't you ever told him how you feel?"
"Because I'm afraid he doesn't feel the same way about me. I'm sure he only thinks of me as his best friend, like a sister."
"How much you have to learn about men." Rex said as he shook his head. "Come on, we better get ready, they should be just about there." then they both went down into the basement and took their positions at the computer consoles.
One truck was now in sight of the capital building and the other was in sight of the White House, which was no longer white. Gangs had been tagging the house with their initials. One time a group painted the whole thing red, and they never had the chance to repaint it.
"Are all the people in place?" asked Burkey though the walkie talkie.
"Yes" answered Rex. "Every one has called in except for Phoenix. I hope Cinco has everything ready shall I call them?"
"Yes. but make it quick, we are about ready to go in."
A minute later Burkey got the reply, "They are ready but their time didn't change so they thought they were an hour early. Want me to send the general message now?"
"In two minutes, by then we should be through the gate"
"All right Rex out."
The catering truck rolled up to the large gates in front of the White House.
"What may I do for you?" asked the black overweight guard at the gate.
"We're the caterers for the party that the president is throwing today for the King of China." Burkey told him with a convincing tone.
"I wasn't told of any party that the President is having today, wait a minute till I call the house."
"No problem," Burkey said.
The guard dialed the number of the house. "Is there supposed to be a party today that I'm not aware of?"
"Yes there is Bill, I was sure you were told. Are the caterers here? I hope so, they don't have a lot of time to get everything ready." said the sweet voice on the other end.
"O.K. thanks, I'll let them in." he then turned and pushed the button to open the gate.
Shayla giggled as she hung up the phone. "Was I good or what?"
As the truck entered the guard was shot in the neck with a dart that would knock him out for several hours. As Burkey said before he didn't want to kill any one, but people were needed to be disabled. Dr.Rex developed these darts to tranquilize a person for six hours and took effect on contact. By the time the people would be awake all the capital buildings would be secured by the Freedom Fighters
As soon as Shayla hung up the phone, Dr. Rex made the general announcement to attack. From all the trucks in all the states, at all the government buildings of importance, the men ran into the buildings, taking out anyone with the darts, who tried to stop them. With in 20 minutes all the buildings were secure. All the corrupt government leaders were tranquilized and bound.
The Armed Forces tried to come against the Freedom Fighters but Dr.Rex stopped them before they could get their troops deployed. By means of satellites aimed at the military bases and with a high level ionic field, a negative charged electronic band was sent out to stop all the planes, trucks, tanks, and other equipment the military had.
Reports flooded the Pentagon that said all the electrical systems at all the bases just went out, and they couldn't do anything to get their stuff going. Of course this didn't matter because the Freedom Fighters had taken the Pentagon also. This wasn't easy but since it was in the morning there, there weren't as many people there as normal, and a large amount of troops were sent there.
When all the reports came back to Burkey that everything was secure he was put on the TV He was put on every station, and on every TV in the civilized world. Dr. Rex. and his technicians had linked every station to this camera that they took to the White House.
Tears filled Shaylas' eyes when she saw the one she loved on TV for all of the eyes in the world to see. She cried softly as she heard Burkey make his speech from the balcony of the White House. She was glad that she was the one that helped him get through this time. These past 4 months were the hardest in his life. Many times he was ready to give up, but she had helped him get through it. Now here he was doing the thing that for so long he had been planning, and striving for. She listened carefully as he spoke and stood in front of the stared and striped banner of this country.
"My fellow Americans, and citizens of the world. I stand before you today, not as a conqueror, but as a deliverer. Like Moses who led the Israelites out of Egypt where they had been in bondage for so many years. We have brought you out of bondage. But you ask, what bondage? It isn't the clearly seen bondage of a conquered nation by another country. But it was the bondage of an oppressing government. A slowly corrupting government that is so sly, so careful that over time they can trap you and you don't even know it. You are now free of this Government ran by the A.L.C. We will bring back the original constitution that our forefathers fought so hard for at the infancy of this great nation. No more shall you pay 13% of you earnings in taxes, No more shall the guilty criminals go free. No more shall your children be afraid of playing outside and the women of walking alone at night. No more oppression of the government. There shall be free enterprise, we will bring the businesses back, and do our best to bring the economy back to the way it used to be 20 years ago. This nation will be free once again in unity under GOD, With liberty and justice for all."
For the next month Burkey stayed in The White House and made plans for, organized, and started the `Reformed Government Under the Original Constitution'. The original constitution was examined and all the laws that weren't a part of that were also carefully examined. Every law that was not in accordance with the constitution was eliminated, and they were many. The former leaders if they did not cooperate were exiled to other countries. Many all over the globe wondered how the Freedom Fighters had done this so effectively and so quickly, with so little notice. No explanation was ever made so no one could repeat it. An army made sure that the members of the A.L.C. did not power again.
Also during the month in the White House, Burkey did a lot of thinking. He thought about, now that this revolt was over and he didn't want to be in the government, what was he going to do? It was time for him to settle down and start a family.-I am in my thirties- he thought one night as he was looking out the window into the city- But who will it be with? I hope Jon will be able to handle his new job- then he chuckled.
Just then Jon came in the room and they discussed just that, how Jon was going to be running this country. He not only had to worry about the citizens of this country, but also he had to think of the foreign policy, arms, keeping the A.L.C. out of the way, and many other things. Burkey told him, "This is why we have this month of organization, plus you have all the aids, and other help you need, so don't worry."
Then the conversation shifted to Burkey and what he was going to do after the month was over. Burkey told Jon all the things he was thinking up to then, and Jon commented "I know who would be perfect for you to be with."
"Who"
"Don't tell me you don't know who, who do you think I mean?"
"Shayla?"
"Exactly, she would be perfect for you."
" I don't think so. She's my best friend."
"That's exactly why, you get along so well."
"I don't think she loves me in that way."
"Don't be so sure Burkey. Haven't you noticed the way she looks at you? You can tell that she's totally in love with you."
"Do you really think so?" I never noticed.
"Because you never looked at her the way I have. Let me ask you something? How do you feel about her?"
"What do you mean?"
"The question I'm trying to ask you is, do you love her?"
"I don't know. I haven't really thought about it before. I think of her a lot though. Some times I'm laying there trying to go to sleep and I realize that I'm thinking about her, it's never really occurred to me before."
"Don't fool your self, you do love her don't you."
"I guess I do," Burkey said as he shrugged his shoulders.
"Then you have to tell her. Promise me you'll tell her when you get back."
"But..."
"No buts, If you don't tell her then I will. You two are supposed to be together. I watched you two when you're together. You two are so happy then. I saw the way she talked to you while we were planning this, don't think I didn't notice. She's been dropping hints the past three years, even if she doesn't realize it."
"I have noticed her trying to get even more close to me these past few months, and you're right. I just realized that I am in love with her. I guess I have been all along, but I just thought I loved her only as a friend, but at times I thought it was more than that so I guess I hid my feelings for her from myself and everyone else. O.K. I'll do it. As soon as I get home I'll tell her."
"That's great, Good luck, and send me an invitation" with that he walked out of the room laughing to himself.
CHAPTER V
After the month of organization was over, Burkey went back to the plantation house to live in peace. He was glad this all was finally over. Jon was left in charge of the affairs of the government, General Gabe was left in charge of the military, Genna was left in charge of health for the nation, and other of the Freedom Fighters were left in charge of the other offices in government. All were able to stay where they lived for the ability of interconnectability with computers enabled them to stay in contact constantly. Burkey was called for the special sessions of congress for his ideas and input since he was the tool in which this new government was able to be in existence.
Rex went back to his castle and continued his work in science, when he made a vital discovery he notified Jon and it was put into use.
As for Burkey, as I said before he went back to his house after the month.
"I'm back" he said as he walked through the door "Is anyone here?"
Shayla came running from the basement. When she reached him she gave him a big hug and with a big smile and tears in her eyes said "I'm so proud of you! You did it, I knew you could do it."
"Thank you Shayla for giving me the courage to go through with it. I couldn't have done it with out my best friend in the world."
"There's something I wanted to talk to you about Burkey."
"There's something I wanted to talk to you about too."
"What's that?"
"This isn't easy for me, I might be good at talking with large groups of people about economics and things of the government But this is harder. Why don't we sit down. When I was there in the White House, that we got repainted, I started to think."
"About what?"
"Mostly life, about what I was going to do after this and where I was going to live. I was thinking it was time I settled down and start a family. Well I got a lot of things figured out there except for one thing."
"And what's that?"
"Who I'm going to settle down with."
"There's a lot of girls in DC you could go out with."
"I don't want any of those girls. I was doing a lot of thinking about this, and I know who it is that I want to be with."
"Who is that?"
"It's the person who was always there for me when I needed someone to talk to, the person who can put up with me better than anyone else can. The person who is loving, kind, and if any thing ever happened to her to where she couldn't be a part of my life, I couldn't go on myself. The lady who is my best friend in the whole world. Yes, it's you Shayla." Shaylas' eyes lit up and her jaw dropped. Burkey continued "Jon helped me realize something during the past month, that I am hopelessly and totally in love with you."
"WHOA, I never knew you felt that way about me. I too have a little confession to make. While you were out storming the castle, I had a little talk with Dr. Rex. And I realized too, that there is some one that I can not live with out, and that my dear is you."
They sat in awe for a while and stared in each others eyes, with tears running down their own. Then, as he wanted to do for such a long time now, he kissed her passionately, but gently, on her rosy lips and told her in a soft loving voice, "You don't have to live with out me if you will be my wife." Then he got down on his knees and asked her again if she would marry him.
With out a hesitation she tackled him and yelled in a high pitched voice "YES, I will marry you. You don't know how long I've wanted you to ask me that question."
When they got back on the couch he started taking off his ring. As he did it he said, "I don't have a ring for you, will this do?" then he put his ring on her finger and then for about an hour they just sat and held each other. They talked about all the fun times they had together during their lives. At this moment they were happy, happier than they ever had been before. They had both realized that they loved each other and more than just friends and now they were with each other. The revolt was a success, the new government was accepted and running well. There was only the future to look forward to, together. All was right with the world.
A few days later I took my chance. I was lonely, I wanted to be with my own people. Although I could Feel the love for Shayla like my other self could, I was still alone for there was no one I could hold. I decided then that I would try to go back to my own time and live my life naturally. I could pick any time that I wanted. It would be a time when I was not known. I at this time was only 25 so I still had the rest of my life a head of me. I knew the only time I could go was when those Space travelers went beyond Pluto to unknown places. My planet and all I know would be destroyed, so I thought it my best chance to go with them and live a new life, and perhaps find someone to love myself.
I went to Dr.Rex. When he was sleeping I left a message on his holograph machine and told him that I would be coming. I didn't tell him who I was I just said that he was the only one who could help me. The next day after he had gotten the message I pushed the button that would enable him to see me. He wasn't as surprised as I thought he would be when I suddenly appeared from the other dimension right in to his laboratory.
"What do you need my services for? ah..."
"Just call me the Traveler."
"O.K. Traveler what do you need?"
"I need your help to get me back to my own time." I said, then I proceeded to tell him of what happened on my world, and why I, felt I had go back there. I also showed him the time-band. I didn't tell him that he made it, but I did say that he was the only one who could tell if I could get back home.
He was very sympathetic with my situation and did what he could to get me back to my own time. After a week with him we felt that every thing was ready for me to go. I bed him good by gave him my thanks. I then told him to watch over Burkey and Shayla then pushed the button that sent me back to ancient Greece. When I was there I picked up some papers from Socrates, then catapulted myself into my own time. I was careful to avoid myself there so he wouldn't know his future.
As I traveled through time I thought of how my new life was going to be. At last I was going to be able to get out of this suit. I was going to be able to eat real food, that's if my stomach still Worked. I would be able to breath the life giving air on my own. But most of all I would be able to hold some one again. No longer was I linked to my other self. I could now live my own life, feel my own feelings, and dream my own dreams.
I reflected back on my experiences with my second home. I noticed that my first one had become corrupt, so had the second one. I was glad I was able to help in some way, to help it live in peace a little longer. I thought to my self that people are the same no matter where or when they live. And history will inevitably repeat it's self if the inhabitants of Earth aren't careful.
In the new life I will live back in my world, I will go where no one has been before. I will help to set up a living system. With the experiences I have had on Earth, I feel I can contribute a great deal to this new place. And maybe some day it will go the way that my old world has gone, but at least I wont be there to see it happen. I will write you my experiences there. So long and have a good life. And may you contribute a good page to your futures history.
